Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise at the age of a small child. Her aunt was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could dedicate her time to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learned by example the power of art as an avenue for action. DuVernay had an aunt who was socially conscious and taught her how to utilize the arts as a way of expressing herself. While DuVernay grew up living in Compton with her parents, she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. Her father recalled watching the civil rights march of the past on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Alabama's Selma would influence her later on to create the film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. After graduation, she studied in the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay discovered a passion for the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She started as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the house and examining the waste from one of juries. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalistic duties and decided to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay was hired straight out of college as an intern at a small studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. In addition to PR her agency also launched several social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
